Credit Union House, just across the street from the state Capitol in
Madison, is a bold testimony to the strength of not-for-profit,
member-owned financial institutions in our state. The not-for-profit
co-ops have been in business for nearly a century here, helping their
2.2 million members save, borrow and meet a full range of financial
needs.
Credit Union House in Madison is a command
center for grassroots efforts - where credit union people come to
cultivate their ongoing partnerships with state agencies and public
officials, celebrate their role in strengthening Wisconsin’s
economy, and tout their success in returning millions of dollars each
year to their member-owners. It’s also a place for credit union
Activists to explain how different credit unions are from for-profit
institutions and how credit unions improve the quality of life in their
communities. It’s a central point for education seminars,
legislative briefings and strategy sessions.
But more than that, it’s a symbol that credit
unions matter to millions of working people in Wisconsin –
and that they’re here to stay.

The Wisconsin Credit Union League has invested in the Credit Union House
on Capitol Hill, a building just blocks from the U.S. Capitol in
Washington, D.C., that will serve as a hub for grassroots advocacy
efforts.
The house is owned by all 50 state leagues and offers a place to
discuss strategies, meet legislators, hold meetings, receptions and
fundraisers, and provide a "home away from home" for credit union people
lobbying their members of Congress.
Having a place from which to coordinate Hill lobbying efforts is
important since Wisconsin's congressional delegation influences critical
pieces of legislation affecting credit unions and their members. Those
issues include bankruptcy reform, retirement savings programs, education
investment accounts, business lending, privacy, deposit insurance reform
and financial literacy among other issues.
