Apply for The Foundation's DE Scholarship today!
While the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) Development Education (DE) training in April is already full, there's still a chance to attend if you apply for The Wisconsin Credit Union Foundation’s DE Program scholarship. The scholarship, created as part of The Foundation’s Professional Development Scholarship Program, may award the recipient’s credit union a reimbursement of up to $2,000 after the recipient successfully completes the program. Attendees who earn certification as Credit Union Development Educators (CUDEs) learn to improve the lives of members and communities by applying credit union philosophy in situations demanding unique approaches to problem solving. Whether you’re new to the movement or a seasoned professional, the DE program has something for everyone. For young professionals it can be the eye-opening experience that leads to a decision to commit to a career with credit unions.
To be eligible, applicants must be an employee, member and/or volunteer of a Wisconsin Credit Union League affiliated credit union with $50 million or below in assets. Applicants must also be actively involved in credit union activities, such as chapter meetings, committee work, credit union Activism, etc. Applications are due by March 1. RP3 program gets new name, will involve 5,000 employees from dozens of Wisconsin companies
An online investment education program developed and piloted for the first time in the United States by Wisconsin credit unions in 2009 will soon benefit Wisconsin companies and thousands of their employees. The Real Progress & Pathways to Prosperity (RP3) program provided 30,000 hours of basic online investment education for 3,520 employees of 80 credit unions in 2009. Then in 2010 a select number of RP3 grads took an additional 50 hours of coursework to become Certified Financial Educators® (CFEd®). And now, in 2011, those specially trained community educators will offer the same basic online program they initially completed to employers across the state under the new program name, the Investor Education in Your Workplace™ program. The program, funded by a grant from the Investor Protection Trust, offers a total value of $400,000 in free training to Wisconsin firms. Free webinars on Feb. 23 and March 2 are explaining the program to interested companies. The Investor Protection Trust (IPT), is a nonprofit organization devoted to investor education. Since 1993 the IPT has worked with the states to provide the independent, objective investor education needed by all Americans to make informed investment decisions. Visit www.investorprotection.org. Free art, articles & more now available for 2011 National Credit Union Youth Week promotions
The 2011 National Credit Union Youth Week, April 17-23, is right around the corner. CUNA is making it easy to promote your credit union's planned events with free downloadable art and articles. CUNA also has several other resources to help in your planning efforts. This year’s theme will be "music," with the slogan Moneyrocks@mycreditunion. Also remember to sign up for the 2011 National Youth Savings Challenge taking place during the month of April. In 2010, more than 3,800 youth deposited $385,339 into credit union accounts during the Savings Challenge. That’s $101 saved per participant! Participating Wisconsin credit unions also opened more than 280 new youth accounts.
Help members avoid costly tax refund loans by promoting website
Remind members that they don’t need to use expensive tax refund loans to get their refund quickly. Instead they can get their refund fast and for free via direct deposit to their credit union account. The League has created a sample newsletter article/press release that points them to www.freetaxrefund.org, a site maintained by The League that explains their options using a credit union account. Credit unions can also leverage their relationships with local radio stations to ask them to run a public service announcement (PSA). The League has made available pre-recorded 15- and 30-second spots, as well as a written script that can be read by announcers. Simply ask your sales rep to provide the copy to on-air personalities or download the recorded PSAs for use anytime now through April 15. A ready-to-use graphic, which can be placed on your member website in order to direct members to www.freetaxrefund.org, is also available by contacting Chad Helminak at (800) 242-0833, Ext. 6012.
Get local schools involved in the National Financial Capability Challenge
Proper financial education for youth is not only critical to their futures, but also the future financial stability of our country. That is why it is important for credit unions to urge local teachers to participate in the National Financial Capability Challenge, offered by the U.S. Treasury Department and the President’s Advisory Council on Financial Literacy. The challenge is designed to increase the financial knowledge and capability of high-school aged youth across the United States by learning more about personal finance. It also challenges teachers and schools to incorporate financial education into their curricula. This year’s challenge will be held March 7 - April 8, but teachers should register now.

State GAC discounts help Young Professionals make an impact during conference
Thanks to The League's State GAC Young Professionals registration and hotel deal, 25 young professionals were able to attend and make an impact on lawmakers during the conference, held in late January. Those in attendance also participated in the Young Professionals Council's first networking meetup, which drew credit union young professionals from the Madison area.
