Activists: continue contacts with our U.S. Senators on jobs bill
Every credit union employee, director and member should contact U.S. Senators Kohl & Johnson on Senate Bill 2231, the Credit Union Small Business Jobs Bill, which would increase CUs’ business lending cap from 12.25% to 27.5% of total assets. Visit www.theleague.coop for a link to our grassroots email tool and other resources to aid your response. Reach out to members you’ve helped with business loans to share stories of the value of credit union business lending as part of videos, visits and other contacts. Even if you’ve already made contacts previously, do so again using alternate means; this bill will pass only with an unprecedented response. A win on this bill will improve our legislative position on MANY issues including regulatory relief!
State economic development corp. seeks CU input
The Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. invites credit union CEOs and senior executives to participate in a Financial Services Roundtable Sept. 27 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on campus of UW Fond du Lac. $100K of free financial ed available to credit unions, SEGs
Sign up your employees or your employer groups for the fall round of investment education that's being offered as part of our statewide Investor Education in Your Workplace® program (a $100 value per person). The program offers participants unbiased, online training in personal finance and investing fundamentals. Participating employers are being asked for a one-time set-up fee. Host an intern from the Dominican Republic
Can your credit union or family host an international guest this fall? As part of a U.S. Department of State program, CU professionals from the Dominican Republic will visit Wisconsin as part of 4-week, unpaid internships that run Oct. 10 to Nov. 2. Each intern will have a basic command of spoken English. All costs will be fully covered, including lodging, transportation and a stipend for food and incidentals. The interns will stay with a host family for the first week and in a hotel for the final three weeks. The World Council of Credit Unions helps develop a curriculum for their stay. NCUA reallocating exam resources to larger CUs
NCUA currently spends 45% of exam hours on CUs below $50 million in assets, yet this group holds only 7% of overall industry assets. Meanwhile, credit unions with more than $1 billion in assets hold 47% of industry assets and receive only 10% of exam hours. To address this imbalance, NCUA will shift attention to where more risk is held. This means NCUA examiners will spend less time in well-performing small credit unions. Candidate survey reveals views on CUs' top issues
Before the upcoming elections, review the results of The League's 2012 Candidate Survey to see candidates' position on CU issues. We asked those running for office whether they're a member, whether they support increased business lending by credit unions and whether they support credit unions' tax status. The results identify credit union-friendly candidates and those who need more input from Activists to understand and support our issues. DFI offices are relocating this fall
The Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions – which houses the Office of Credit Unions – is relocating to the 5th and 3rd floors in the Tommy G. Thompson Commerce Building at 201 West Washington Avenue in downtown Madison. The new office is just a stone's throw from DFI's current office, also on Washington Ave. The State currently has an existing 20 year lease on the space, ending in 2017. The move should take place by the end of November.

Celebrate ICU Day & International Year of Cooperatives in October
Credit unions have a lot to celebrate in October. Of course, it's Co-op Month, but there's also International Credit Union Day, Oct. 18. October is also another occasion to spotlight 2012 as the International Year of Cooperatives. This year’s International Credit Union Day theme will be "Members Matter Most." CUNA has free resources available on its website, as well as other promotional items available for sale to help credit unions plan and execute their celebrations. The World Council of Credit Unions has additional resources to help you celebrate.
Compliance Roundtable features NCUA, OCU, League and LSC Compliance Team
The League's Compliance Roundtable Sept. 27 in Pewaukee will feature NCUA's new Troubled Debt Restructuring rule. You'll also hear from the Office of Credit Unions about policies for loan workouts and nonaccrual standards for loans. Plus, The League Service Corp.'s Compliance Specialist Team – which works on a shared basis with credit unions statewide – will share insights regarding policies, what examiners look for, loan organizing, reviewing, documentation and more. The group discussion alone makes this one of The League's most popular events.
IRA Workshop puts your CU a "step above" for 2012-2013

brass|MAGAZINE returns to WI schools this fall
Any WI public high school that wants it will again receive brass|MAGAZINE for their students this year. This magazine teaches personal finance basics and is offered to educators free via the Wisconsin Credit Union Foundation.
