Activists: continue contacts and prepare for Lame Duck
Credit Union Activists can remain active in their push for the Credit Union Small Business Jobs Bill, S. 2231/H.R. 1418. A vote in the U.S. Senate is anticipated to occur in the lame duck session, after the November elections and before Christmas. Grassroots efforts have mainly focused on the Senate, where the bill will be considered first. Activists should take this time to prepare our House members for a vote. A major grassroots campaign is planned for the lame duck session and even if you and your credit union or chapter colleagues have made or collected contacts previously, you will need to make contacts again at that time. Wisconsin small businesses are expected to benefit greatly from the passage of this legislation so Activists should continue to identify businesses willing to share stories about the value they see in additional credit union business lending. Celebrate Corporate Citizenship Award during October's Co-op Month, International Credit Union Day (Oct. 18)
Wisconsin credit unions have a new accolade to celebrate during Co-op Month and ICU Day: a Corporate Citizenship Award recognizing their extraordinary community involvement. The accolade, bestowed by Corporate Report Wisconsin magazine, highlights credit unions' support for their communities as described in the REAL Solutions Scorecard. The publication also recognized credit unions as a driving force for the Stock the Shelves food drive that supports 108 food pantries statewide, for financial literacy efforts that include their financial life simulation for teens called Money Mission®, and for efforts to pass state legislation doubling their own charitable giving capacity. DFI offices are relocating this fall
The Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions – which houses the Office of Credit Unions – is relocating to the 5th and 3rd floors in the Tommy G. Thompson Commerce Building at 201 West Washington Avenue in downtown Madison, near DFI's current office on Washington Ave.
Compensation survey is now available
The League's 2012 Compensation Survey, which outlines pay rates for various CU staff positions, is now available. The survey can help your CU make informed decisions about the rate of pay so it can successfully attract and retain qualified staff. Credit unions that contributed to the survey should have received an email with a link to a pdf file of the report. Those that did not contribute to the survey can order a copy for $100. Small CU Roundtable just $20, Mid-size & large CU Roundtables address risk factors
League Roundtables help CUs address their most pressing issues. This year small CUs can register for just $20. Their event Oct. 18 will share insights on improving income and exams. Mid-size and large CUs will meet on Nov. 1-2 and Oct. 25-26, respectively. They'll hear important presentations about technology and enterprise risk management (ERM)--the need to have processes in place as well as a culture that proactively identifies, measures and manages risk in order to seize opportunities and adjust to negative events. Family & Medical Leave Act Workshop rescheduled to December
The FMLA workshop in Stevens Point has been rescheduled to Dec. 4. Credit unions with 50 or more employees or those near that need this guidance to implement one of the most complex employment laws. Wisconsin's Money Mission® being used in 48 states
Wisconsin's Money Mission®, an interactive, web-based life simulation, is being used in 48 states to teach teens personal finance. Schools point students to credit unions' websites to play the game and vie for scholarships. From there, they can be captured as your CUs next generation of borrowers. Nearly 2,000 new WI participants will complete investor education
The Investor Education in Your Workplace® program, pioneered by Wisconsin CUs, continues this fall with perhaps as many as 8,000 participants from nine states participating in the Fall 2012 program. The 10-week online education program, which offers participants unbiased, training in personal finance and investing, has already been run five times since the first pilot program started in Wisconsin in 2009. The latest training cycle begins Oct. 22 with continued support and leadership provided by the Investor Protection Trust. In total, over the last three years more than 100 credit unions and other employer groups in Wisconsin will have participated in the program, helping deliver over 50,000 hours of online investor education to more than 5,000 people in Wisconsin. The program won a Wisconsin Financial Literacy Award last year as one of the fastest growing, workplace-based investor education programs. CUs preparing to host interns from Dominican Republic
As part of a U.S. Department of State program, CU professionals from the Dominican Republic will visit Wisconsin as part of 4-week, unpaid internships that run Oct. 10 to Nov. 2. Many thanks to Summit, Dane County, Glacier Hills and Taylor CUs for hosting the visitors, and working with The World Council of Credit Unions to plan their learning experience.
brass|MAGAZINE returns to WI schools this fall
Any WI public high school that wants it will again receive brass|MAGAZINE for their students this year. This magazine teaches personal finance basics and is offered to educators free via the Wisconsin Credit Union Foundation. Please ensure your local schools are aware of it and use it, especially if you have a school branch. Your support of the Foundation makes this possible.

Nominations are being accepted through November 30 for the 2012 Wisconsin Financial Literacy Award, which honors individuals and organizations for their excellence in increasing financial literacy. Past winners have included Brokaw, Educators, STAR, Summit and UW credit unions, while Wisconsin credit unions have won collectively for their REAL Solutions® initiative, the brass|STUDENT program, their youth-run branches, the Money Mission® life simulation for teens, and their Investor Education in Your Workplace® program.

Registration opens soon for CU philosophy training in 2013
Registration opens soon for the May, 2013 session of Development Education training, held in Madison. DE training offers "CU philosophy immersion"—an in-depth look at CUs' history, global reach, and challenges. Attendees who become Development Educators (CUDEs) learn to solve pressing local problems by applying CU philosophy. DE training often helps young professionals commit to a CU career.
