Route your retirement, help members route theirs

Most employees aren't saving enough for the retirement lifestyle they envision. Plan to attend—and encourage your staff to attend—The League's "Route Your Retirement Fair" on Feb. 12. For just $39, this interactive event will benefit you personally as well as show you how to present this simulation to members to ensure their retirement dreams are on track. The fair was developed through a partnership between the National Credit Union Foundation and CUNA Mutual Group.

Activists' defeat of banker-backed bill is a big victory for credit unions
Thanks in part to a strong grassroots response from Wisconsin Activists, legislation that was a top banking lobby priority has been dealt a "death blow" in the U.S. Senate. CUNA will now watch for any attempt by banks to attach it to any other year-end legislative package and oppose it unless it is accompanied by credit unions' member business lending bill. FULL STORY

U.S. Senate passes credit union-backed ATM legislation
The U.S. Senate has passed ATM legislation that will not only reduce credit unions' regulatory burden, but also remove the threat of certain lawsuits against credit unions. The bill is a victory for credit unions and demonstrates the impact Activists have in reducing regulatory burden. FULL STORY

Thrive through service: Wisconsin League President
Brett Thompson, who received one of the credit union movement's highest honors in November, explained in an editorial for Credit Union Times how credit unions' service during challenging economic times offers not only critical help for members and communities, but also a continual cycle of advocacy and opportunity for credit unions. Wisconsin credit unions are partnering with Asset Builders of America to involve teens in a competitive quiz tournament focusing on personal finance. It's a great way of making financial education fun while helping students achieve state standards for personal financial literacy. FULL STORY

Nearly 2,000 new WI participants are completing investor education
The Investor Education in Your Workplace® program, pioneered by Wisconsin credit unions in 2009, continues this year with perhaps as many as 8,000 participants from nine states. The 10-week online education program, which offers participants unbiased, training in personal finance and investing, has been run five times since the first pilot program. FULL STORY

Congratulations to Josh Roberts of Enterprise CU, who has received the Wisconsin Credit Union Foundation's Young Professionals Scholarship for 2013. He has chosen to use it to attend CUNA Management School next summer.

Watch for a mailing regarding League Board nominations
The League Board is accepting nominations through Feb. 15 to fill terms representing credit unions in Region 2 and Region 4. To be eligible, the person must be a Director, President, Senior Vice President or Executive Vice President of a League member credit union within the Region that person is to represent. Obtain nomination forms by contacting Karen Raether at (262) 408-6021. All candidates must be nominated by the president or chair of their credit union and obtain seconding signatures by two other credit unions within the Region. Watch for a mid-December mailing with all the details.

You don't need this headache: let The League file your 990
Let us save you from the headache of completing what has been called the most complex form in IRS history—the Form 990. Sign up by January 31. The Form 990 is a public document so it is recommended that a copy be given to your Board of Directors for review. Links kits for the February Chain of Hearts fundraiser supporting Children's Miracle Network Hospitals are being shipped in December to credit unions that donated to the charity this year while other credit unions will receive an invitation to participate and order form for supplies. FULL STORY
Note the new escrow, standard mileage rates for 2013
The Wisconsin Department of Financial Institutions has set the 2013 mandatory interest rate on required escrow accounts at .20%. For more information, please see The League's ii Release No. B014. Also beginning January 1, the standard mileage rate for the use of a car (including vans, pickups or panel trucks) will be 56.5 cents per mile for business miles driven.
