Free webcast today on NCUA's
Last week, the
National Credit Union Administration (NCUA) proposed two initiatives –
the Credit Union Homeowner Affordability Relief Program and the Credit
Union System Investment Program – that would help homeowners and add
liquidity to the system. NCUA, in conjunction with the Credit Union
National Association, state leagues and the National Association of
Federal Credit Unions will hold a free
informational webcast at 11 a.m.
today that will outline the two proposed programs. The League has
prepared talking points to address questions from members, media or others
on the strength and safety of the credit union’s corporate system. To

The League News

League News will not publish the week of Dec. 22. The League News will
resume its regular publishing schedule on Monday, Dec. 29. League offices
will be closed Dec. 24 and Dec. 25. The offices will re-open on Friday,
Dec. 26 with regular hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Jim Drogue talks about Free Tax Preparation
Assistance Program with NCUF in podcast
Jim Drogue, The League's Vice President of Credit Union Development,
spoke to the
National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) about the
Free Tax Preparation Assistance Program. During the interview he
discussed how the program works, with whom credit unions
can partner with and how the program saves credit union members and others
money during tax time. The interview is available as a
podcast on NCUF’s Real Solutions website.

Assistance sites easy
Credit unions participating in the
Free Tax Preparation Assistance Program can access several tools from
The League that will help them promote their efforts, making it easy for
credit unions to focus on what’s important – helping low-income tax filers
avoid refund anticipation loans (RALs) in favor of fast, free tax refunds
via direct deposit.
Materials now available on The League’s EdVest webpage
Credit unions can now access free marketing materials for
EdVest, 529 college savings plan,
www.theleague.coop/edveststuff. EdVest gives Wisconsin
consumers the opportunity to access Wisconsin credit unions’ most
competitive rates as part of a long-term, state-sponsored college savings
plan. It also lets credit unions hold some of the plan’s invested funds.
If you’re new to the program, don’t miss your chance to learn about this
REAL Solution. An
informational webinar is available online only through January 28,
2009. DVDs will not be available.
UnitedOne CU creates special savings account to help students save for
UnitedOne Credit Union is helping students at Washington Junior High
School in Manitowoc save for an annual school trip to Washington, D.C.
with the newly created “My D.C. Savings” account offered through the
credit union’s school branch. The credit union will pay a 1% APY dividend
on account balances between $25 and $1,000. The credit union hopes the
account will encourage students to save for the trip, while also helping
them build lasting saving habits.

with the Governor’s Financial Literacy
Each year, the Governor’s Council on Financial Literacy honors
individuals and organizations that have offered innovative financial
education efforts and programs.
Apply for a Governor’s Financial Literacy Award by Jan. 9, 2009.

Credit Unions, as well as The League for
REAL Solutions and the
brass|STUDENT program. The application deadline is Dec. 28.

CU Difference: Blackhawk
Community CU halts foreclosures
Blackhawk Community Credit Union is giving families affected by
foreclosure more time to explore their financial options, while also
giving them a chance to stay in their homes during the holidays, by
foreclosures. The temporary halt is in effect from Nov. 26 through
Jan. 9, 2009, and will affect first mortgages held by Blackhawk Community
CU that are in foreclosure and about to proceed to sheriff’s sale. The
credit union is sending letters to its members who fit the foreclosure
criteria, encouraging them to contact the Mortgage Department to discuss
the various options that are available.

house on Inauguration Day
Celebrate the opening of the
Credit Union House in
Madison on Inauguration Day, Jan. 5. Festivities will begin with a ribbon
cutting ceremony at 11 a.m., which the Governor, as well as legislative
leaders and other government officials, have been invited to attend prior
to the Inauguration ceremony at the Capitol. An open house for invited
guests and credit unions will also be held on that day from 3:30 to 6:30
