Take two minutes to protect the credit union tax exemption

With the U.S. Senate preparing to release the first in a series of tax reform discussion drafts, Wisconsin credit unions are continuing efforts to communicate the "Don't Tax My Credit Union" message to our state's Congressional delegation.

Throughout Phase III of Wisconsin’s "Don’t Tax My Credit Union" advocacy efforts, credit unions should illustrate what’s at risk and encourage grassroots support by:

  • Enlisting the help of young professionals to showcase the member and community benefits that are possible thanks to credit unions’ tax status and cooperative structure, such as in-school branches.

  • Offering members the opportunity to protect their financial institution by asking them to sign Don’t Tax My Credit Union postcards.

  • Using social media to drive staff and members to to view the video and contact Congress. Social media like Facebook and Twitter offer great opportunities to connect the need to protect credit unions tax exemption, through stories of credit unions’ benefits for individuals, families, small businesses, local organizations and communities, with an easy way to advocate with a pre-written email to legislators.

You can track the number of contacts to Congress made by each credit union on The League’s tax advocacy resource page (login required).  The report is updated every Monday and Thursday.

If you’d like additional postcards, other advocacy materials like posterboards or buttons, or have questions, please contact Sarah Wainscott (608) 514-0086.
