From Red to Black: boost your bottom line with good planning

This summer is flying by! Recently, I've been assisting credit unions in western, southwestern and northern Wisconsin. As part of our Small Credit Union Initiative I've completed final reports to help two credit unions follow through on their growth strategies and I'll be working with five more over the course of next year, starting this fall. I'm also looking forward to chatting with credit unions at our Small Credit Union CEO Roundtable and Director's Conference, both coming in October.

Here's what seems to be top-of-mind as I travel the state:

  • Call Reports. The League's Nov. 6 webinar will explain what to look for on the new forms, how to enter the information and why it's important.

  • Budgeting. The 2013 Corporate Assessment will be 8 basis points of your insured shares as of June 30. According to the NCUA, the amount should be expensed in July and reported on the September 30, 2013 Call Report. Payment to NCUA is due in October, 2013. The NCUA is offering a free webinar on budgeting for credit unions of all sizes on Aug. 13. For those of you looking for some budgeting refresher courses, we'll be covering expense control and allowance for loan loss later in December.

  • Compliance. Every credit union I've talked to that has used The League Services Corp.'s Compliance Specialist Program – a staff sharing service to expedite compliance workload – says the non-stop regulatory deluge has made it a must-have resource. Even small credit unions that use a shared employee just one or two days per month are reaping huge benefits in tasks accomplished and time freed up to focus on more important tasks (see "Income"!). Visit our event calendar for a laundry list of helpful webinars on compliance topics.
