About the Program

As the economy slowly recovers and we continue to watch our credit union’s bottom line, we know that making an HR mistake could take its toll very quickly. So what can we do and what can’t we do as we work to serve our members in the best way we can? Is it okay to check C-Cap as our background check when we are hiring? Can we require a part-time employee to go full-time—or the other way around? What are our options when employees have used all of their vacation, sick leave, or PTO time and still call in sick? How do we know whether it’s safe to terminate an underperforming employee? Can we discipline or terminate an employee because of an attitude problem if the employee is otherwise doing a good job? If we need to terminate an employee, isn’t it always best just to say we’re eliminating the position?


You will find the answers to these and many other human resources questions at this full-day HR Boot Camp. The program will begin with a review of the basic principle of employment in Wisconsin: the “at-will” doctrine—what it means, the exceptions to it, and its implications for many of the processes credit unions follow and the decisions they make. We will also cover hiring dos and don’ts, the importance of meaningful performance reviews, and smart and effective discipline and termination techniques. And there will be plenty of time for questions, problem-solving, and networking.


Your take-aways from the program will include an orientation checklist, an interview primer with suggested interview questions, a termination checklist, and a list of the 20 employment law facts every credit union employer should know.
