WI tops the Phase II grassroots goal for tax advocacy! New resources in phase III
Wisconsin Activists have achieved 107% of the 30,000 contacts goal for Phases I and II of our state’s “Don’t Tax My Credit Union” grassroots advocacy. Because credit unions cannot afford to completely “go dark” and are still competing for priority with over 400 groups, Wisconsin will begin Phase III in the coming weeks. This next phase will continue our successful “dedicated week of advocacy” strategy and tap new resources like young professionals, events, postcards and possibly advertising to fuel our outreach. Credit unions are encouraged to use the resources online and please report to Sarah Wainscott the number of contacts you’ve collected with letters, postcards and social media. Save the date for the The League's State Government Affairs Conference
The League's State Government Affairs Conference is set for Feb. 12. Please budget to send at least one representative. This is Wisconsin credit unions' premier opportunity to build pro-credit union relationships with state lawmakers.

CUNA Mutual Group invites you to a free security conference in Madison
Credit unions and other firms will observe October as National Cyber Security Month at a free conference that explains the security risks you must handle to protect your brand. Send your staff in charge of security or risk management to this valuable session Oct. 23 at the CUNA Mutual Group Conference Center. Register free online. Space is limited so act quickly.

Earn income for your CU, offer members big discounts
Need income? The Invest in America program has generated income for credit unions through more than 281,000 new car loans, increases in credit and debit card usage and reimbursements for marketing a suite of member-discounted products and services. Scorecards have been updated to aid your advocacy
We’ve updated the Wisconsin CU Scorecard, which explains the value of credit unions and advocate for The continued credit union tax status. Use it to educate staff, volunteers, lawmakers, media, schools, SEGs, etc. Order hard copies from Chad Helminak at (608) 514-0080.

Foundation funds went to work in 2013: give this fall to fund future opportunities
The Wisconsin Credit Union Foundation recently donated $1,000 to CUAid to help credit unions affected by the Colorado flooding. Two credit unions also received REAL Solutions Initiative Grants totaling $10,000. They include the youth-run STAR CU in Madison, for a new website and laptop computer and Park City CU in Merrill to teach small businesses who cannot access affordably priced loans or services about the self-help they can access through credit unions. Scholarships went to Don Emmer of Best Advantage CU for Development Education training and to Jeremy Yardley of Southshore CU for CUNA Management School. The Foundation’s annual donor drive is underway. Your CU can ensure that opportunities like this continue by making a gift as part of your League & CUNA dues invoice, coming in December. All 2013 donors will be recognized as part of our Annual Donor Fund Society.

Popular presenter Brett Christensen to lead Consumer Lending Workshop Nov. 14-15
The first day will help loan officers, member service reps and lending professionals master best practices for lending success. Topics include interviewing, risk, documentation, cross selling insurance products, denials, FICO scores, underwriting approaches, bankruptcy predictors, debt ratio analysis, loan-to-value analysis and more.  The second day will help managers improve overall lending results. Topics include loan product & rate design, departmental productivity and efficiency, delivery channels, organization, policy, centralized vs. decentralized, indirect lending, collections, and sales culture development. Compliance Officer School convenes in the Dells Nov. 20-21
Because of the volume and complexity of regulatory changes this past year alone, this year's Compliance Officer School Nov. 20-21 in Wisconsin Dells will focus on the changes affecting credit unions the most. Whether or not you attended our fall Compliance Roundtable, you'll gain by delving into the practical aspects of this year's hottest compliance topics, including mortgage lending, appraisals, TILA/RESPA, escrow, ability-to-repay, credit scoring, risk pricing, electronic signatures, the NCUA's proposed and final rules, letters to credit unions, exam hot-buttons and more. Gina Carter, who heads the Credit Union Law Team for Whyte Hirschboeck Dudek S.C., and The League's Legal Affairs staff provide essential guidance on key issues.

Compensation survey is now available
The League's 2013 Compensation Survey, which outlines pay rates for various CU staff positions, is now available. The survey can help your CU make informed decisions about the rate of pay so it can successfully attract and retain qualified staff. Credit unions that contributed to the survey should have received an email with a link to a pdf file of the report. Those that did not contribute to the survey can order a copy for $100. Financial educators: national conference offers resources, networking
The national Jump$tart Coalition invites financial educators nationwide to its National Educator Conference in Washington, D.C. Nov. 1-3. Lodging and meals are included in the $595 registration fee, and scholarships are available by emailing The conference will offer resources, networking, two free financial planning clinics, a financial educator certification program and professional development credits. Sponsor a local teacher or encourage a financial educator within your credit union to attend!

YP announcements (for YP Liaisons)

Save the date for our next YP Boot Camp in Milwaukee Nov. 20
Encourage young professionals age 35 and younger to attend The League’s November 20 YP Boot Camp in Milwaukee at the Junior Achievement Learning Center. Our past events in Wausau, La Crosse and others have attracted a packed house of young leaders looking to learn about the industry, network with peers, improve their credit union and build a CU-career. The agenda and a link to register for the event will be sent first to those already registered (free) as part of the YP Network. Contact Chad Helminak for details.

Apply by 10/31 for YP Scholarship, new grant to offset operational/tech expenses
The Wisconsin Credit Union Foundation is offering Development Grants that credit unions can use to offset technology and operational expenses, and a Young Professional Scholarship of up to $2,000 to apply toward a national conference in 2014. Read the Development & YP funding guidelines. Applications for both the Development & YP funds are due Oct. 31

44% of WI school districts require financial education; offer brass to expand the list!
The DFI announced that 44% of Wisconsin school districts require a course in personal financial literacy. You can help expand the list of districts that are able to do this by providing schools the teaching resources they need to make this happen. Be sure you’ve offered them the brass|STUDENT PROGRAM, featuring brass|MAGAZINE and its online support materials. With more than 350 teachers using brass and new sponsorship packages to help Wisconsin credit unions personalize their support for brass, the time is ripe to engage local students.
