September Chapter Bulletin

Chapter Bulletin is a monthly publication of The Wisconsin Credit Union League (Communications Department) published September through May. League directors and chapter presidents receive Chapter Bulletin to assist with announcements at monthly chapter meetings. The last three items are intended as talking points for Young Professional Liaisons, but can be used by others if the YP Liaison is not present or if the chapter does not have a YP Liaison.

Hotel rooms still available for CU House/Hike the Hill, Sept. 20-21
While the release date for the hotel room block at The Liaison Hotel has passed, credit unions can still book a room at the original discounted hotel rate for The League's Credit Union House/Hike the Hill event, Sept. 20-21 in Washington, D.C. Even if you've found a better rate at a nearby hotel, The League has arranged a price match so that everyone can stay together at The Liaison Hotel on Capitol Hill. If you have a room reserved at another property, please consider cancelling it and joining us at a great location for a great price. The CU House/Hike the Hill event gives Activists a fantastic opportunity to garner support from Wisconsin lawmakers on MBL legislation in the U.S. House and Senate, as well as tell their stories about how increased member business lending will improve Wisconsin's communities. It also allows Activists an opportunity to dispel any misinformation on taxation presented to members of Congress by the Wisconsin Bankers Association. During the event, Activists will also meet with the Debbie Matz, NCUA Chairman, and Elizabeth Vale, Team Lead, Small Financial Services Providers for the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. Activists will also have a chance to participate in a joint briefing and networking reception with representatives of Ohio credit unions. See the draft agenda for more information.

Don't miss your credit union's opportunity to reach new members via new consumer website
When Wisconsin consumers visit looking for more information about credit unions in their area, will your information be adequate to ensure they know whether they’re eligible to join your credit union? The site, which offers basic information about U.S. credit unions including those in Wisconsin, allows credit unions to make available to consumers more detailed information about their membership eligibility requirements and more. If your credit union has not updated this information it is missing the opportunity to reach out to and gain new members from the hundreds of Wisconsin consumers who visit the website each month. In the month of July alone, the site saw 266 visitors from Wisconsin and 12,368 nationally. So what are you waiting for? So far 91 Wisconsin credit unions have made updates to their credit union’s information. If you have misplaced your username and password, which were sent to all Wisconsin credit union presidents in April, or if you have questions, please contact Dawn Scarce at (800) 242-0833. The site, which was developed through the work of a task force of the American Association of Credit Union Leagues (AACUL), is jointly funded by Credit Union Leagues and Associations and is being maintained by CUNA.

The Foundation's Ca$h Calendar raffle is back! Earn 21 chances to win up to $2,500
For just $10, you’ll earn 21 chances to win a total of $2,500 in cash prizes. All you have to do is purchase a Ca$h Calendar for the month of December from the Wisconsin Credit Union Foundation, return the slip attached, and then sit back and wait for your name to be drawn as a winner! Celebrate ICU Day & the start of International Year of Cooperatives in October
Credit unions have a lot to celebrate in October. Not only is it Co-operative Month, but it also marks International Credit Union Day, Oct. 20, and kicks off the International Year of Cooperatives on Oct. 31! This year’s International Credit Union Day theme will be "Credit Unions Build a Better World." It coincides with the theme set for the International Year of Cooperatives, which is "Cooperative Enterprises Build a Better World." CUNA has free resources available on its website, as well as other promotional items available for sale to help credit unions plan and execute their celebrations. Also, don't forget the International Year of Cooperatives in your planning. Available on the World Council of Credit Union’s website is a branded logo, the goals of the year, as well as information on how to share planned events on the master events calendar.

Reminder: Money Smart Week is moving to April
Money Smart Week Wisconsin – the statewide, multi-partner initiative to teach citizens better money management – is moving to April 21-28. That means that beginning in October, the month when Money Smart Week has traditionally been held, most of the 28 regional planning coalitions will focus efforts on preparing events for the new spring observance.

Network with peers and get training tailored to your needs at The League’s fall Roundtables
Get training on important topics while also networking and sharing ideas with peers during The League’s mortgage and asset size roundtables. Roundtables are different than other educational seminars because in addition to an informational session on a specific topic, they also provide an opportunity for attendees to discuss questions and issues that relate specifically to their position or credit union. While each roundtable discussion is based on a general topic, the discussions provide a unique learning experience based on the questions and information shared by those in attendance. Upcoming roundtables include the Mortgage Roundtable, Oct. 5; the Small Credit Union CEO Roundtable, Oct. 26; the Large Credit Union CEO Roundtable, Nov. 2-3; and the Midsize Credit Union CEO Roundtable, Nov. 10-11. Directors' Conference gives directors the essential training they need to fullfill their role

Save the date for the The League's State Government Affairs Conference Jan. 24
The League's State Government Affairs Conference, Jan. 24, will be here sooner than you think. The 2012 event will usher in a new structure that will shift the event from a two-day session to one on non-election years. Be sure your budget provides for sending at least one representative to the conference. This is Wisconsin credit unions' premier opportunity to build pro-credit union relationships with lawmakers. Registration now open for NCUF’s Spring 2012 Development Education training
The National Credit Union Foundation’s Development Education training, April 18-25, is one of the most in-demand trainings available to credit union staff and Activists, often reaching capacity soon after registration opens. Now's the time to register because the April session is sure to fill to capacity. The training, which is held close to home in Madison, provides an in-depth look at the movement including its history and the global outlook, as well as tools to address hot issues and challenges facing credit unions today. Attendees who earn certification as Credit Union Development Educators (CUDEs) learn to improve the lives of members and communities by applying credit union philosophy in situations demanding unique approaches to problem solving. As high school students around the state return to school this month, they'll also be greeted by a new issue of brass|MAGAZINE. The brass|STUDENT Program, which includes brass|MAGAZINE STUDENT EDITION – a
young adult lifestyle money magazine designed to teach high school students about the money side of life™, is provided to any Wisconsin public high school that wants it thanks to the collective support of Wisconsin credit unions (via the Wisconsin Credit Union Foundation). All credit unions should use The League's sample press release and newsletter article to explain their support for the program to members and the media.

Money Mission offers credit unions unique opportunity to attract younger members
Looking to attract young members and raise awareness of your credit union? Then look no further than The League Services Corp.'s innovative financial literacy tool, Money Mission. Money Mission is an interactive, web-based simulation designed to educate users on the fundamentals of personal finance. The game, which offers players a chance to win state-level scholarships, will help credit unions form lasting relationships with local high school seniors by introducing area youth to credit unions, driving traffic to the credit union's website and opening a line of communication.
