Get local schools involved in the National Financial Capability Challenge
Proper financial education for youth is critical to their futures and the future financial stability of our country. That is why it is important for credit unions to urge local teachers to participate in the National Financial Capability Challenge, formerly the National Financial Literacy Challenge, offered by the U.S. Treasury Department and the President’s Advisory Council on Financial Literacy. The challenge is designed to increase the financial knowledge and capability of high-school aged youth across the United States, by helping youth take control of their financial future by learning more about personal finance. It also challenges teachers and schools to incorporate financial education into their curricula. To participate, teachers must register by March 1. As recent FINRA Investor Education Foundation study illustrates why it is important to teach youth financial management skills early in life.

Last year, more than 6,500 youth deposited $383,503 in credit union accounts as part of the challenge. That’s close to $60 saved per participant! Participating Wisconsin credit unions also opened more than 430 new youth accounts.
