As Congress continues the most serious attempt at tax reform in decades, Wisconsin’s credit unions must remain diligent in their attempt to protect the credit union tax status during Phase III of "Don’t Tax My Credit Union" advocacy. Activists’ hard work is already paying off as U.S. Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Menomonee Falls) is the latest of Wisconsins’ Congressional delegation to express his support as part of a response to Activists who contacted his office.

Wisconsin credit unions have been active, sending over 30,000 contacts to Congress asking that legislators "Don’t Tax My Credit Union" (DTMCU). However, to compete with the hundreds of other interest groups fighting for attention and priority, credit unions must maintain strong and consistent advocacy. To accomplish this, Phase III of DTMCU advocacy will continue to use the successful dedicated week of advocacy strategy.

As part of Phase III, Wisconsin credit unions and Activists will:

  • Engage credit union members and staff using DTMCU postcards they can sign.

  • Use young professionals to showcase the kind of member and community benefits that are possible thanks to credit unions’ tax status and cooperative structure, such as visits to in-school branches.

A count of each credit union’s contacts will be updated every Monday and Thursday (login required) on The League’s tax advocacy resource page.

Your advocacy is crucial to preserve the current tax status because the discussions and decisions occurring now are likely to serve as a starting point for future tax reforms.

Wisconsin Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Menomonee Falls) voiced his support in a message to credit union Activists.
