Best Advantage Credit Union in Brillion is the first credit union in Wisconsin to achieve 100% participation in The League’s Payroll Deduction program.

Through this program, employees of Best Advantage support pro-credit union and strategically important legislators and candidates by deducting contributions directly from each paycheck.

"Our employees understand the value in the work that they do," says Tammy Williams, the credit union’s President & CEO. "And they’re very goal oriented. So when we explained that we have to improve what we give to protect the services they provide members, they got it."

Employees were urged to start at a contribution level they are comfortable with, even just a few dollars per paycheck. Their ongoing small contributions have a much larger impact with strong, consistent participation.

"They saw that for less than what they probably spend on a cup of coffee they can make a huge difference in protecting the help we’re able to provide in our community. That was powerful," Williams said.

She also said it was easier for staff to get behind the goal of 100% participation after The League shared what was reachable for a credit union of their size. Suggested goals are set for each credit union to help the movement collectively surpass previous efforts and strengthen the political effectiveness of the industry.

"We said, look, if everyone gives a certain amount using Payroll Deduction and we hold a couple casual days and brat fry, we can reach our credit union’s goal. Being able to show how we’d get there made it easy for them to want to be part of that. They were extremely motivated, and I can’t tell you how proud I am of that," Williams added.

"Each new dollar puts the movement in a strategically stronger position to both protect and promote credit unions’ interests by having friends and advocates in elected office," said League Vice President of Government Affairs Tom Liebe. "Improving this component of our advocacy is a priority. Making monumental strides can be easy. If just half of Wisconsin credit union employees donated $1 a week, we’d exceed goals established for our state’s political giving."

Individuals can use Payroll Deduction to jointly contribute to CULAC and our state PAC, WCULAF, or to deposit funds into their Credit Union Members' Conduit Account.
