Convention kicks off CU growth strategy, focuses on key issues

More than 900 participants, including 77 first-time attendees, gathered for The League’s Annual Convention in the Wisconsin Dells May 8-11 to gain insights that can help their credit union thrive and have some fun. This year's convention theme, "Unite for Good," highlighted a new, internal campaign for credit union growth. It was a fun-filled few days of learning, networking and raising funds for some great causes.


Check out some of the highlights:


  • Young Professionals. Around 90 credit union professionals under age 35 participated, including 12 chosen to CRASH the event at almost no cost. The group networked and received exclusive presentations on issues relevant to the credit union movement. Read the convention recap on the YP Network blog.


  • Regulators' Insights. New OCU Director Kim Santos and Keith Morton of the NCUA shared perspectives on the regulatory scene and some of the hottest issues related to exams.


  • The League's Annual Meeting. League President & CEO Brett Thompson and League Board Chair Jennifer Schilling discussed the impact of the past year on credit unions as well as the future of the movement going forward. The 2013 dues schedule was approved with no changes. The 2013-2014 League Board and League Committees were introduced.


  • Membership Address. CUNA Board Chair Pat Wesenberg and former CUNA Chair Harriet May invited Wisconsin credit unions to lead the Unite for Good effort, an internal campaign for credit union growth. They outlined the suggested steps by which credit unions nationally can help achieve the shared vision of consumers choosing credit unions as their best financial partner. As credit unions follow these steps, the movement will be on pace to achieve within a decade 50 million consumers choosing credit unions as their primary financial institution and $20 billion in member benefits.


  • League President & CEO's report. Brett Thompson told convention delegates that Wisconsin credit unions' "1 with The League" campaign has set the pace for the "Unite for Good" effort nationally, training credit unions to remove barriers to grassroots involvement, conduct awareness campaigns and use local media, social media and civic outreach to tell the CU story. The REAL Solutions effort has helped credit unions foster service excellence, including by providing financial education in schools and the community, serving new Americans and others who are financially underserved, and preserving lower rates and fees than competitors.


  • Education. Convention again offered multiple days of learning value for less than what attendees might have paid for a single training elsewhere! Topics included mobile technology, asset/liability management, motivating Young Professionals, compliance for directors, credit union philosophy as a strategy for profitability and outreach, using consumer insights for business success, mortgage lending regulations, reaching Gen Y & Millennials, protecting a loan portfolio from losses, employment law, making data-driven decisions, and the economy.


  • Insightful Speakers. Lee Wetherington shared the latest technology and mobile trends, John Moore of Starbucks and Whole Foods marketing acclaim explained how managing customer experience is key to sustaining a strong brand as a company grows, Dr. Moses Altsech explained the fallout of the Greek financial crisis, and Lt. Col. Robert Darling (USMC, Ret.) shared the story of the first 24 hours inside the president's bunker during the 9/11 terrorist attacks.


  • Exhibition Hall. More than 100 exhibitors showcased products and services. Jack Gill (First Community CU of Beloit), Tom Young (Pioneer CU), Colleen Woggon (Oakdale CU), Tammy Williams (Best Advantage CU), Dean Wilson (Focus CU) and Tim Tranberg (Co-op CU) got dunked in the Wisconsin Credit Union Foundation's dunk tank, raising more than $1,100 for Foundation programs and services.


  • Conduit Lunch. More than 70 Members’ Conduit account holders heard an analysis of the 2012 presidential campaigns from Ken Goldstein, political science professor at UW-Madison and election consultant providing election analysis for top national media outlets.



  • Foundation raffle. The Wisconsin Credit Union Foundation raffled off several items including a mini iPad, Brewers and Packers tickets and more that raised $4,665 to help The Foundation promote the growth and health of credit unions and their communities. An additional $6,750 in donations to the Foundation were also collected.


  • Dinner & Laughs with Comedian Greg Hahn. A full house enjoyed a chef-prepared meal and top-shelf desserts. Greg had the room in stitches with non-stop humor and physical comedy.


  • WCULAF auction. The auction raised close to $3,000 to help pro-credit union allies in government.


  • Mark Tauscher. Former Wisconsin Badger and Green Bay Packers tackle Mark Tauscher revealed personal insights and an inside view of pro football and free agency. He also posed for pictures during a meet-and-greet.
