Wisconsin credit unions communicate their value

Creating awareness about the value of credit unions is a key action area driving credit unions' national campaign for growth, Unite for Good. And as the threat of taxation looms in Washington, D.C., Wisconsin credit unions are stepping up their game to ensure people know they're a force for good in their communities and for local families.

The League produces the Scorecard annually to explain the value of credit unions statewide. Order copies to distribute to lawmakers, media or as leave-behinds at community events.

Wisconsin credit unions have expanded on the action steps in the Unite for Good campaign that increase awareness by:

  • Distributing the Scorecard. This print & online publication explains how Wisconsin credit unions deliver value statewide, including by saving their 2.4 million members more than $1 billion since the start of the recent recession.

  • Educating their boards & staff on CU philosophy. Seventy-four credit union professionals from Wisconsin have completed the Development Education program offered by the Wisconsin Credit Union Foundation, earning the distinction of Credit Union Development Educator (DE). The training is a credit union philosophy immersion program that challenges attendees to apply cooperative problem solving to local and world issues. The Wisconsin Credit Union Foundation annually offers a scholarship for the program.

  • Advertising the credit union difference. Materials that have been proven effective with consumers are available for chapters to collaboratively advertise the benefits of credit union membership. Credit unions in the Madison area chapter have funded the use of these ads in their area. They are available free for any chapter's use.

The Unite for Good effort is an internal growth strategy developed by CUNA in conjunction with its Board, state leagues, credit unions and system partners. The plan's action steps – to remove barriers, increase awareness and foster service excellence–are aimed at helping more credit unions become their members' primary financial institution by compelling members to see credit unions as their best financial partner.
