Operations Consulting

From Red to Black: Small CU Initiative provides huge value at no cost

Bill Rockeman, The League's Senior Consultant

It is about that time of year again where I start looking for a few credit unions to work with as part of The League’s Small Credit Union Initiative. This is a great program that helps small credit unions with assets $30 million or less to maximize their performance and identify growth potential – all at no cost to the credit unions.

Through the program I provide a comprehensive review of the credit union’s operations. Upon completion, the review is provided to the credit union and will be used as a road map for success.

I also will visit the credit union once a week for three months, and together we will look deeper into the many areas that help the credit union function every day – accounting, operations, lending, policies, compliance and human resources.

Although I have a list of areas to cover, I also encourage credit unions to tell me what they need help with. This way, I can tailor the program to provide the most value.

As part of the program your board members can attend two sessions of our Board of Directors Training Series at no cost. And, we’ll even facilitate a four hour strategic planning session for free!

Speaking of Strategic planning, it continues to keep me busy and on the road visiting with credit unions around the state. If your credit union has yet to book a date, please give me a call sooner than later to reserve your desired date.

The NCUA indicated last week during a board meeting that the 2012 Temporary Corporate Credit Union Stabilization Fund (TCCUSF) assessment is estimated to be 8-11 basis points.

It was also announced that there will be no 2011 National Credit Union Share Insurance Fund premium. While the NCUA indicated that it does not anticipate a premium for 2012, it has set a range of 0-6 basis points for a potential premium.

These announcements should help credit unions in planning for next year.

The League’s Supervisory (Audit) Committee Workshop is coming up in early December. This is a great training to ensure your committee understands its important role as the watchdog of your credit union. And at just $49 per registrant the workshop offers a great opportunity for your whole committee to participate. Attend a session Dec. 7 in Pewaukee or Dec. 8 in Madison.

I’ve been getting a lot of calls on accounting issues as of late with most stemming from issues discovered during exams or after recent audits.

It’s important to remember that as part of The League’s consulting services I do offer accounting help. I’m more than happy to visit and help you with an accounting issue you are having trouble with or just give me a call.
