2013 Dora Maxwell, Louise Herring & Desjardins Award winners

Each year, The League and Credit Union National Association sponsor the Dora Maxwell, Louise Herring and Desjardins Award competitions. These awards recognize credit unions of all asset sizes across the nation for their exceptional outreach and service to members and community.

DORA MAXWELL AWARD: This award recognizes credit unions for their charitable work, community outreach and volunteerism. The award is named after Dora Maxwell, an early credit union pioneer who organized hundreds of credit unions, developed volunteer organizer clubs and worked with organizations on behalf of the poor.

LOUISE HERRING AWARD: Recognizes credit unions that provide extraordinary member service and programs that embrace the “credit union difference”. The award is named after Louise McCarren Herring, a credit union pioneer, who believed that the operational application of credit union philosophy helped better people's lives.

DESJARDINS AWARD: Recognizes credit unions for their outstanding involvement in youth and adult financial education. The award is named in honor of Alphonse Desjardins, the founder of the North American credit union movement. Desjardins established the first “caisse populaire”, or people’s bank, in Quebec in 1900 and helped establish the first American credit union in New Hampshire in 1909.
