Advocate for your members' best interests at state GAC!

The League's State Government Affairs Conference (GAC), set for February 12 in Madison, is your prime opportunity to advocate for your members' best insterests! By coming together to illustrate the member- and community benefits that flow from a member-owned financial cooperative, credit unions preserve a strong voice for their 2.4 million members among state lawmakers. Industry leaders like CUNA's VP of Legislative Affairs Ryan Donovan will offer insights to defend credit unions' tax status and share his take on issues that are key to successful credit union advocacy. Take advantage of our discounts and participate in one of two panel discussions to hone your unique advocacy skills. There will also be a free pre-conference workshop for Young Professionals. Register now

The 2014 state GAC will feature:

  • CUNA's Senior Vice President of Legislative Affairs Ryan Dononvan. Gain a better understanding of the current legislative issues affecting credit unions and why it is more important now than ever for credit union executives, volunteers and members to be actively involved in credit union advocacy.

  • George Hofheimer, Chief Research & Innovation Officer at Filene Research Institute, the credit union industry "think tank." Learn how credit unions' unique approach to serving member-owners fuels advocacy efforts and gain ideas on how you can bring your stories to life.

  • Informative panel discussions tailored to hone your advocacy skills. New attendees or those who wish to improve their approach, messaging and follow-up with lawmakers will gain insights from our "Advocacy 101" panelists. This discussion offers a valuable primer on how to best represent the voice of your members in the way you present information and cultivate ongoing relationships with policymakers. More experienced Activists will gain new ideas, strategies and creative ways to bring their activism to a new level.

  • Capitol visits.  This valuable face-time with legislators and their staff is why we come to Madison! It's your chance to represent your members' voices on issues that directly impact the product availability, service and pricing that your members experience.

    Take advantage of our discounts!

    • $99 registration – close to half off the regular price – for young professionals ages 35 and younger and staff with active Member’s Conduit accounts.

    • One additional free registration for credit unions that add five new employees to Payroll Deduction before January 11.

  • Post-visit group debriefing. We'll gather again as a group at Credit Union House to compare notes on the outcome of our visits and issues that require follow-up.

  • A reception with legislators and government officials. Mingle with state legislative decision-makers in a more casual atmosphere to build the personal relationships that foster continued advocacy. It's a great way to network and share more stories of the "credit union difference" with state leaders.

The Unite for Good effort is an internal growth strategy developed by CUNA in conjunction with its Board, state leagues, credit unions and system partners. The plan's action steps – to remove barriers, increase awareness and foster service excellence–are aimed at helping more credit unions become their members' primary financial institution by compelling members to see credit unions as their best financial partner.
