We teach 6th graders the 50-20-30 rule for savings using partially frosted doughnuts. They list several "needs" before eating the first half. Then, describe their "wants" and get ot eat the plain 30%. Before eating the last 20%--the only frosted part--they describe what they "wish" for--whether a pet skunk or college. They learn that "saving" is the best part! They each get a piggy bank and $1 to get started.
