Don’t Fall Victim: Fraud & Scams 
Becky Garton | Risk & Compliance Solutions/Risk Consultant | TruStage 
Fraudsters are constantly evolving their tactics and identifying new, sophisticated ways to steal money and data from employees and members. Using common channels like emails, text, and phone calls; fraudsters typically disguise their identity while retrieving confidential member information. Their multi-channel approach looks for victims who find their stories convincing and will willingly click on links or share sensitive information, which can be used to authorize and transact many types of transactions. 

This session covers various forms of check fraud; business email compromise; fraudulent instruction; ransomware; account fraud; consumer scams; elder abuse and more.

Custodial Accounts under Wisconsin’s UTMA 

Kim Hoppe, Director of the Compliance Specialist Program | The League
Custodial accounts are one way a family member can save for a minor.  Frontline staff need to be able to explain and open these accounts.  In this session The League’s Kim Hoppe will lead a discussion on documentation and information needed to set up and service these special accounts.

Becky Garton

Risk Management Consultant, Risk & Compliance Solutions | TruStage

As a Risk Management Consultant with TruStage, Becky works with credit unions to help identify areas of risk in their operations and works closely with them to put the appropriate controls in place.  

With 17 years focused on helping credit unions manage risk, Becky is passionate about consulting with a concentration on payments, deposits, funds transfer/ACH, and fraud. She is a member of the International Association of Financial Crime Investigators Group. Before joining TruStage in 2006, she worked for Certegy/Fidelity as a Supervisor and Trainer for chargebacks and compliance. 

Paul Guttormsson

Senior Vice President & General Counsel | The League

Paul drafts regulatory comment letters on behalf of credit unions, helping to shape regulations that affect credit union operations, income, and member service. He also supports The Legal Affairs team with telephone and email assistance to credit unions as well as research and analysis to develop The League’s ii releases, and he is a frequent presenter for League compliance roundtables and webinars. In addition, he oversees The League’s forms program.

Paul graduated with honors from UW-Eau Claire in 1985 and worked as a newspaper editor for several years before attending the University of Wisconsin Law School, where he graduated with honors in 1994. He joined The League in 2001.

Kim Hoppe

Director of the Compliance Specialist Program | The League

Kim is a familiar voice to Wisconsin credit unions as part of our Legal Affairs team, offering guidance by phone and email on compliance issues, and practical insights as part of League compliance trainings. She also oversees the Compliance Specialist team and coordinates their work with participating credit unions around the state.

Kim graduated from UW-Parkside and received her law degree with honors from Chicago-Kent College of Law.   

 

Nikki Springer

Compliance Resource Manager | The League
Nikki Springer has almost 20 years of financial industry experience with a background in sales, marketing, project management, and compliance. She spent 8 years at a bank prior to joining The League. She has been a Compliance Specialist for 11 years and was recently promoted to The League’s Compliance Resource Manager position. In this role, she splits her time between her work as a Compliance Specialist and helping the Legal Affairs team field credit union questions to support their members. Nikki graduated from Marquette University with a degree in Leadership and Organization.
