The League Legal Affairs Attorney’s Conference brings together attorneys from Wisconsin’s Credit Unions for a day of discussion around Compliance and Legal matters of importance to our members. 

*Please note this special event is limited to attorneys/legal counsel that work in credit unions.

*The League will apply for CLE credits for this event.

Compliance Update on Collections & Deceased Members   
Paul Guttormsson, SVP & General Counsel | The League
The League’s Paul Guttormsson will provide an overview and update on deceased accounts including setoff on a deceased member’s accounts, probate & transfer by affidavit, recovering collateral when a borrower dies (i.e., voluntary surrender or repossession), and dealing with mortgage loans when a borrower dies. It is a good time for a brush-up on the Garn-St. Germain Act!

Title Insurance Related Considerations for Lenders and Fraud in Today's Real Estate Market
Meghan E. Grulkowski, Agency Counsel | Knight Barry Title, Inc. 
Meghan will do a deep dive into the title insurance commitment including how it's created, how it should be read, and what the requirements and exception sections of the commitment mean. She’ll also discuss what lenders should look for on a title commitment prepared as a part of a purchase or refinance transaction. Finally, Meghan will discuss the ever-evolving landscape of fraud in the real estate industry including seller impersonation fraud, mortgage payoff fraud, and title company impersonation fraud.

Natalia will present Regulatory & Litigation Issues in Loan Servicing and Collection in Wisconsin, including material on recent litigation and regulatory trends. Natalia will also provide highlights from the Husch Blackwell webinar series.

Credit Union In-House Attorney Work with Vendors & Contracts
Steve Heiderer, Senior Vice President & Chief Operating Officer | Guardian Credit Union
Steve will discuss contract review and negotiation as well as terms or conditions to watch for. He will also provide an overview and tips for contract negotiations. This session will also dive into vendor due diligence.

The League’s Kim Hoppe will lead this session on Powers of Attorney and some of the more complex issues they can present.

Paul Guttormsson

Senior Vice President & General Counsel | The League

Paul drafts regulatory comment letters on behalf of credit unions, helping to shape regulations that affect credit union operations, income, and member service. He also supports The Legal Affairs team with telephone and email assistance to credit unions as well as research and analysis to develop The League’s ii releases, and he is a frequent presenter for League compliance roundtables and webinars. In addition, he oversees The League’s forms program.

Paul graduated with honors from UW-Eau Claire in 1985 and worked as a newspaper editor for several years before attending the University of Wisconsin Law School, where he graduated with honors in 1994. He joined The League in 2001.

Natalia Kruse

Partner | Husch Blackwell
Natalia’s consumer financial practice consists primarily of assisting installment lending, finance and other companies defend their interests in alleged violations of state and federal consumer credit protection laws, including various provisions of the Wisconsin Consumer Act, the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, the Truth in Lending Act, the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act and the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Natalia’s ability to listen closely to clients and analyze their situations allows her to advocate for and effectively achieve client goals.  

Natalia also advises businesses on legal issues that arise with the Internet of Things (IoT), helping companies continue to connect the world. 

Steve Heiderer

Senior Vice President & Chief Operating Officer | Guardian Credit Union
Steve earned his JD at Marquette University Law School, and the following year began his credit union career as a Compliance Officer at Guardian. He held the position of VP Internal Audit/Compliance prior to his current position as SVP & COO where he oversees branch operations, internal audit, regulatory compliance, legal, purchasing, and marketing for the credit union. 

Kim Hoppe

Vice President of Legal Affairs | The League

Kim is a familiar voice to Wisconsin credit unions as part of our Legal Affairs team, offering guidance by phone and email on compliance issues, and practical insights as part of League compliance trainings. Kim also helps research regulatory issues and provides guidance and education to credit unions regarding those regulations. 

Kim graduated from UW-Parkside with a business administration degree and received her law degree with honors from Chicago-Kent College of Law. Kim joined The League in 2012.
