Powers of Attorney Complexities

It is important for credit unions to understand the different powers of attorney (POAs) and know how to verify the validity of a POA.  This session will help you understand the roles of the principal and agent(s), the scope of authority granted in a POA, and best practices when dealing with POA documents.

Speakers

Alaina Ackley

Alaina Ackley, AAP, APRP, CAMS, NCP | Director of Audit, PaymentsFirst

Alaina Ackley is the Director of Audit at Macha/PAR. She has worked in the financial industry since 2008, in various roles including BSA, AML, and fraud detection and prevention. She is a former member of the APRP Oversight Panel, worked on several FedNow advisory groups, and participated in several national fraud peer groups. At Macha/PAR, Alaina is responsible for conducting ACH Audits and ACH Risk Assessments at member financial institutions.    

Alaina earned her CAMS accreditation in 2014, her APRP in 2018,  AAP in 2019, and NCP in 2023. She holds a Masters degree in Justice Studies and Cybersecurity from Southern New Hampshire University and a Bachelor’s degree in Organizational Administration (UW Milwaukee) and Native American Studies (UW Madison). 

Becky Garton

Risk & Compliance Solutions/Risk Consultant | TruStage

As a Risk Management Consultant with TruStage, Becky works with credit unions to help identify areas of risk in their operations and works closely with them to put the appropriate controls in place. With 17 years focused on helping credit unions manage risk, Becky is passionate about consulting with a concentration on payments, deposits, funds transfer/ACH, and fraud. She is a member of the International Association of Financial Crime Investigators Group. Before joining TruStage in 2006, she worked for Certegy/Fidelity as a Supervisor and Trainer for chargebacks and compliance.

Becky resides in Wisconsin and holds a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. Becky and her husband have three boys. In her free time, she enjoys watching her kid's sporting events, cooking, and boating with her family. 

Nikki Springer

Compliance Resource Manager | The League
Nikki Springer has almost 20 years of financial industry experience with a background in sales, marketing, project management, and compliance. She spent 8 years at a bank prior to joining The League. She has been a Compliance Specialist for 11 years and was recently promoted to The League’s Compliance Resource Manager position. In this role, she splits her time between her work as a Compliance Specialist and helping the Legal Affairs team field credit union questions to support their members. Nikki graduated from Marquette University with a degree in Leadership and Organization.

Paul Guttormsson

Senior Vice President & General Counsel | The League

Paul drafts regulatory comment letters on behalf of credit unions, helping to shape regulations that affect credit union operations, income, and member service. He also supports The Legal Affairs team with telephone and email assistance to credit unions as well as research and analysis to develop The League’s ii releases, and he is a frequent presenter for League compliance roundtables and webinars. In addition, he oversees The League’s forms program.

Paul graduated with honors from UW-Eau Claire in 1985 and worked as a newspaper editor for several years before attending the University of Wisconsin Law School, where he graduated with honors in 1994. He joined The League in 2001.

Kim Hoppe

Vice President of Legal Affairs | The League

Kim is a familiar voice to Wisconsin credit unions as part of our Legal Affairs team, offering guidance by phone and email on compliance issues, and practical insights as part of League compliance trainings. Kim also helps research regulatory issues and provides guidance and education to credit unions regarding those regulations. 

Kim graduated from UW-Parkside with a business administration degree and received her law degree with honors from Chicago-Kent College of Law. Kim joined The League in 2012.
