Trust Accounts | Kim Hoppe | VP of Legal Affairs | The League

Trust accounts often create confusion for credit union staff.  In this session we will discuss processes and procedures for opening and maintaining trust accounts, transaction handling, successor trustees, and lending issues.

Compliance Collaboration Table Topic Discussion 

Our last session is an interactive roundtable discussion focused on key areas impacting credit unions. You will join 3 of 4 table topics offered and spend 20 minutes per topic. Each table will be led by our Compliance Team subject matter experts who will facilitate peer-to-peer conversations, share insights, and explore current challenges, emerging trends, and best practices. 

These roundtable sessions are designed to encourage open dialogue, knowledge sharing, and networking with peers facing similar opportunities and challenges at Wisconsin credit unions. 

 
  • Lending (Consumer & Mortgage) – Led by Rod and Jason 
    Discuss opportunities, risks, compliance considerations, and operational challenges in consumer and mortgage lending. 

  • Bank Secrecy Act (BSA) – Led by Terri and Sara 
    Explore current BSA requirements, examination trends, risk management strategies, and practical approaches to maintaining compliance. 

  • Examinations – Led by Kevin and Laura 
    Share experiences and best practices for preparing for and managing regulatory examinations, including lessons learned and common areas of focus. 

  • Deposit Operations – Led by Sam and Kelly 
    Examine operational challenges, regulatory developments, fraud prevention strategies, and process improvements within deposit operations. 

3:15pm - 3:30pm
Roundtable and wrap-up 

We’ll close out the conference with a roundtable debrief of the table topic discussions and a look ahead to future compliance education opportunities.

Speakers

Kim Hoppe

Vice President of Legal Affairs | The League

Kim is a familiar voice to Wisconsin credit unions as part of our Legal Affairs team, offering guidance by phone and email on compliance issues, and practical insights as part of League compliance trainings. Kim also helps research regulatory issues and provides guidance and education to credit unions regarding those regulations. 

Kim graduated from UW-Parkside with a business administration degree and received her law degree with honors from Chicago-Kent College of Law. Kim joined The League in 2012. 

 

Paul Guttormsson

Senior Vice President & General Counsel | The League

Paul drafts regulatory comment letters on behalf of credit unions, helping to shape regulations that affect credit union operations, income, and member service. He also supports The Legal Affairs team with telephone and email assistance to credit unions as well as research and analysis to develop The League’s ii releases, and he is a frequent presenter for League compliance roundtables and webinars. In addition, he oversees The League’s forms program.

Paul graduated with honors from UW-Eau Claire in 1985 and worked as a newspaper editor for several years before attending the University of Wisconsin Law School, where he graduated with honors in 1994. He joined The League in 2001.
