About State GAC

Why Attend?

The credit union difference is more than a slogan. It's the real, tangible benefits that make credit unions consumers’ best financial partner. If we’re not talking about the Credit Union Difference, who is? Lawmakers need to know that credit unions are engaged, socially responsible and a key player in Wisconsin’s economy.

Be an active participant on the issues directly impacting your credit union. This is your opportunity to introduce or reinforce the value your credit union provides members and why that is worth protecting and enhancing!

In addition to meeting with lawmakers, you’ll hear from experts on making your advocacy effective. Collaborate with peers from around the state during the sessions, in legislative meetings and during the evening reception.

How will we make a difference?

We are stronger together.

Join over 350 Credit Union Activists together in the State Capitol to send a strong message to legislators: The credit union movement is engaged to protect the interests of our 3.3 million members and work to serve them better.

As a result of our advocacy efforts, legislators have helped to promote or protect the movement by:

  • Allowing credit unions to offer prize-linked savings accounts, like Wisconsin’s Saver's Sweepstakes, which helped Wisconsin members to collectively save over $2 million in just one year.
  • Enhancing financial education in Wisconsin schools.
  • Securing important state regulatory wins, including protecting credit unions' use of the term"banking."
  • Ensuring the independence of the state credit union regulator, the Office of Credit Unions.

Schedule Overview

The League prepares attendees with personalized schedules, meeting guides, best practices and a State GAC app, to guide first timers – and veteran attendees, alike – through the conference.

After walking through credit unions meeting goals, Activists will head over to the Capitol to meet with the lawmakers that represent you, your credit union and other credit unions in the district.

Attendees will receive conference materials in advance, including a draft of your personal legislative visit schedule. Activists legislative meetings in groups, often with representatives from multiple credit unions in the area – and with a designated State GAC veteran to act as the meeting lead.

Your meeting assignments are based on home addresses*, credit union locations or field of membership. The Capitol Office Visit Guide will help guide the discussion and suggest opportunities for you to effectively share story illustrating the Credit Union Difference.

After your capitol visits, head back to the Monona Terrace for lunch and our debrief session. We’ll share how the meetings went and what was learned from your legislators.

To end the day, attendees will mingle and reflect on the day in a more casual setting.

The State GAC brings credit unions of every size and every corner of the state together to talk about what we all have in common: putting people before profit to serve members and Wisconsin communities. As State GAC ends, consider making one more stop to your legislators offices to share your credit union specific materials, and better know you as a business in their district.
