Royal Credit Union (RCU) received its first place Desjardins Financial Literacy Award for 2015 at the 2016 CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference in Washington, D.C.
RCU was honored for a long list of financial education initiatives from January 2014 to June 2015. The credit union advanced to national judging in the fall of 2015 for having achieved a first-place state-level award among credit unions above $500 million in assets.
"Financial education truly distinguishes credit unions from other financial institutions," said League President & CEO Brett Thompson. "It's credit unions' highest form of valor, in terms of the mission to return value to members. By empowering individuals, financial education truly strengthens communities and economies as a whole."
"Royal Credit Union has time and again distinguished itself as a financial education leader through its broad range of programs and effective partnerships," he added.
"Our congratulations to everyone at RCU whose efforts have contributed to this success. They have set a high bar for personal financial education nationwide."
Accepting the Award (L to R): Front row: John Sackett, Rudy Pereira, Back row: Desmond Foy, Tom Huffcutt, CUNA CEO Jim Nussle, Jennifer McHugh and Brianne Meszaros.
*The Desjardins Award is named in honor of Alphonse Desjardins, the founder of the North American credit union movement. Desjardins established the first "caisse populaire," or people’s bank, in Quebec in 1900 and helped establish the first American credit union in New Hampshire in 1909.
