In 2017 we advanced credit unions'
We enacted regulatory improvements, secured lawmakers' support to reduce regulatory burden, halted harmful rules on arbitration and overtime, supported and offered improvements to the Office of Credit Unions on its state rule for member business lending, preserved the independence of credit unions' state and federal regulators, obtained rebates for credit unions and staved off a share insurance premium as the Corporate Stabilization Fund closed, preserved small loans that help members, defended credit unions' use of the term "banking" and fought frivolous banker lawsuits. Political & legislative advocacy
We protected credit unions' tax status as part of tax reform, passed two bills with unanimous support from state legislators, advanced federal legislation to boost CU real estate lending, updated the Model Credit Union Bylaws, ensured no harmful proposals were added to the state budget bill, showcased to school districts credit unions' support for teachers and students, held advocacy roundtables to inform and empower CU Activists, offered young professionals exclusive federal advocacy training, recovered $25 million for credit unions as part of data breach litigation and filed a new lawsuit to pursue damages from Equifax. We offered and updated a free library of adaptable policy language, provided hands-on assistance to help credit unions complete compliance workload, delivered Wisconsin-specific compliance training and ensured credit unions had immediate guidance on a full range of compliance topics, whether online, via email or by phone. We again served as the premier training resource for credit union professionals, offering 24/7 access to learning as well as venues for professional networking. A special effort added financial counseling credentials for close to 52 credit union professionals, bringing our two-year total to 120. We also grew our Young Professionals program to more than 714 YPs from 85 credit unions, expanded our Business Lending Council and added an HR Council to facilitate professional networking and best practice sharing. We advanced a credit-union owned company that helps credit unions expand business lending, offered guidance to grow income through financial counseling, delivered training on operational issues and provided consulting that helped credit unions manage risk, exams, balance sheets, accounting, board planning and more. We kept credit unions up-to-date on issues affecting the Movement, touted credit unions' success to media and policymakers, furthered an awareness campaign, offered online networking channels and helped tens of thousands of consumers find credit unions they could join. Read more >>
