Activists Testify in Senate Committee, Bankers Oppose Once Again

On Tuesday, Activists from across Wisconsin attended the Senate Committee on Financial Institutions and Revenue hearing to support and testify in favor of SB 451, a bill modernizing the state statutes governing credit unions. The Assembly Committee hearing took place in October.

Special thanks to the following Activists that did an excellent job representing the interests of credit unions in their testimony and in response to Committee members’ questions:

  • Rep. David Murphy (R-Greenville) and Sen. Rob Stafsholt (R-New Richmond) bill authors
  • Chris Moczynski, Prime Financial Credit Union
  • Grant Beardsley, Royal Credit Union
  • Mike Schenk, CUNA

Wisconsin Banks Once Again Show Bill Opposition

Both this week and in October, Wisconsin banks showed up in force to spread misinformation and create opposition to stop SB 451/ AB 478 from moving forward. Their remarks focused on criticism of the credit union tax status, growth and success of the Movement, and suggestions that the bill would, “provide credit unions with even more tools to grow beyond the intention of their original chartered mission.”

The Wisconsin Bankers Association is hosting a lobby day the week before our State Government Affairs Conference. Without hesitation the WBA has encouraged their members to share baseless and misleading claims about credit unions, to their own benefit.  It’s time to take a stand – by meeting with legislators during our State GAC or by contacting legislators through the Grassroots Action Center, or on your own. We cannot allow the banks to spread misinformation and have the last word on who you are and what you stand for.

Add Your Voice to the Effort with a Message to Legislators!

While The League continues to meet with legislators, strengthen our message by adding your voice! Legislators need to hear from YOU – their constituents, to know that you support this legislation and will not allow others to define what is best for credit unions.

Go to the Grassroots Action Center on The League’s website to send a pre-written, editable letter sharing your support.
